Winter Solstice (Dongzhi) brings the longest night of the year and the turning point where yin peaks and yang is reborn. The best thing you can do for yourself today is get a good night's sleep.
In 2026, Winter Solstice (Dongzhi) falls on December 22. An old saying goes, “At the Winter Solstice, the first yang is born”: yin reaches its peak, and yang slowly begins to return.
Why go to bed early on the Winter Solstice
In Chinese medicine, yang energy is thought to need the most protection when it's just beginning to sprout. Around the solstice, go to bed early, skip the late nights and go easy on intense workouts, so your body can keep its energy tucked inside.
A Winter Solstice ritual
In northern China, families eat dumplings; in the south, it's tangyuan, sweet glutinous rice balls. A mugwort foot soak before bed, a cup of sleepy-time tea and some soothing water-sound music make a complete Winter Solstice bedtime ritual.
