Fear and the Kidneys: Why Constant Unease Can Leave Your Hands and Feet Cold

Grove Flow

Always bracing for “what if,” waking with a start at night, a chill in your lower back. Chinese medicine connects this state with the Kidneys.

There's a kind of unease that isn't anxiety about any one thing. It's a deeper sense of never feeling quite on solid ground: always worried about the future, afraid of getting it wrong, sleeping lightly.

The Kidneys store essence, and fear sends qi downward

In the Five Elements, the Kidneys belong to Water, and their emotion is fear. Chinese medicine says “fear sends qi downward”: long-term fear and unease can make your inner reserves sink and drain away. Many people experience it as weak knees and lower back, cold hands and feet, and low energy.

Warm your body first

Before bed, soak your feet in hot water for 15 minutes, then rub Yong Quan (KI1) on the soles until they're warm. Stick a heat patch on your lower back, or rest a microwavable heat pack on your lower belly. Black foods like black sesame, black beans and walnuts are classic winter staples in Chinese food therapy.

Once your body is warm, your mind settles more easily.
