In the US, 37% of people name shedding and hair volume as their top hair concern. TCM’s take: your hair is the “surplus” of your blood, and the “flower” of your Kidneys.
More strands on your brush, a wider part: for a lot of people, it’s a shared worry after 30.
Two Classic TCM Sayings
“Hair is the surplus of blood”: only when there’s blood to spare does some get shared with your hair. “The Kidneys flourish in the hair”: when Kidney qi is strong, hair stays dark and full. So when TCM looks at hair, it’s really looking at blood and the Kidneys.
Check These Three Things First
1. Sleep: chronic late nights are hardest on your blood. 2. Diet: are you getting enough protein and “black foods” like black sesame, black beans and walnuts? 3. Scalp: does it often feel tight, oily or itchy?
5 Minutes a Day
Spread your fingers and comb them from your forehead to the back of your head, 36 times. Press Bai Hui (GV20) at the crown of your head, 36 times. Press Feng Chi (GB20) at the back of your neck, 36 times. After washing your hair, add a few drops of rosemary scalp oil and work it in with small circles using a scalp massager.
If you’re shedding a lot in a short time, losing hair in patches, or your scalp is very red and itchy, please see a dermatologist first.
