Don’t Do the Math at Bedtime: A “Shutdown Ritual” for Money Anxiety

Grove Flow

In an APA survey, 66% of American adults named personal finances as a significant source of stress. Run the numbers at night, and you only end up more wide awake.

Bills, rent, your business, the future. During the day you’re too busy to think about it, but the moment you lie down, the numbers start spinning.

Overthinking Strains the Spleen

TCM says too much worry strains the Spleen. When the Spleen is worn out, you can’t eat or sleep well, and the next day you have even less energy to make decisions. And so the cycle continues.

A 10-Minute Shutdown Ritual

1. An hour before bed, write down tomorrow’s money to-dos on paper, three at most. Then close the notebook.

2. Sit with both feet flat on the floor and take 5 slow breaths down into your belly.

3. Press Zu San Li (ST36), just below the knee, 36 times per side. Then write down three small things that went well today.

A bead bracelet or a talisman can become part of this ritual, a reminder that you’re done for today. They carry cultural meaning and symbolism and do not promise any financial outcome.
