In early 2026, TikTok's “Chinamaxxing” trend turned hot water, house slippers and simmered apple tea into new daily habits for young Americans.
On TikTok, more and more young Americans are sharing their take on “Chinese-style wellness”: a cup of hot water first thing in the morning, slippers around the house, a bowl of congee, a pot of apple, red date and goji berry tea simmering on the stove.
From “weird” to “okay, I get it”
For years, “Chinese people drink hot water for everything” was an internet meme. Now it's a lifestyle people are genuinely trying. The idea behind it is simple: in Chinese medicine, the Spleen and Stomach love warmth and dislike cold, so warm food and drinks are easier for the body to take in.
The easiest place to start
Swap your morning iced coffee for a cup of warm water, and your afternoon drink for a mug of simmered apple tea: dried apple, red dates (jujubes), goji berries and a few slices of fresh ginger, simmered for 10 minutes.
