TCM says “the Liver stores the blood.” Chronic late nights and stress have a way of showing up on your face: sallow, dull and uneven.
Plenty of people notice their complexion looks its worst during their most stressful months. They cycle through product after product, and their skin still looks dull.
The Liver Stores Blood, and It Shows on Your Face
In TCM, the Liver is in charge of storing and regulating blood. From 1 to 3 a.m. is the Liver meridian’s peak time. If you’re still awake then, blood can’t return to the Liver to “recharge,” and the next day your face loses its glow. Bottled-up emotions keep Liver qi from flowing freely too, which can leave your complexion looking greenish or sallow.
Bringing Back Your Glow
1. Get into bed before 11 p.m. It’s the most affordable skincare there is.
2. Sip a cup of rose and aged tangerine peel (chen pi) tea in the afternoon. Rose is traditionally used to soothe the Liver, and tangerine peel to keep qi moving.
3. In the morning, apply facial oil and gua sha from the center of your chin out to the base of your ear, and from the sides of your nose up to your temples, 10 strokes each.
One more thing: for dark spots and post-breakout marks, daily sunscreen matters most. If dark spots suddenly multiply or darken, please consult a dermatologist.
