The most common facial gua sha mistake is starting on the face. The right first step is actually the back of your neck.
Gua sha has been all over TikTok for years, yet plenty of people try it and feel like it does nothing. More often than not, the order and direction are off.
Step one: open the “exit” first
Facial drainage needs somewhere to go. So start by stroking the back of your neck, about 1 cm below the hairline, 36 times. Then glide from your jawline down the side of your neck to your collarbone. That clears a path for everything you do on your face afterward.
Five lines, always moving outward
Jaw to just below the ear; side of the nose to the front of the ear; under the eye to the temple; brow to the hairline; forehead to the temple. Work each line until the skin feels slightly warm. Always apply oil first, keep the pressure light, and don't aim to bring up marks.
“The Lungs govern the skin and hair.” How your skin looks is tied to your breath, your qi and your blood.
If your skin is broken, red and swollen, dealing with severe acne, or you've just had a cosmetic procedure, skip it for now.
